For a diabetic dog, it is necessary to feed diabetic foods instead of the normal diet so as to avoid further complications. Let’s see how to choose the right food for a diabetic dog.

Many of the dogs are at a risk of suffering from canine diabetes. Canine diabetes is an important chronic disease of dogs. In fact, it is one of the most common dog health problems, which is caused due to improper insulin metabolism in the body. The beta cells of the pancreas secrete insulin hormone and are responsible for maintaining the blood sugar level of the body. There are two types of canine diabetes – type 1 and type 2. Type 1 diabetes is caused due to little or no secretion of insulin, whereas type 2 diabetes is caused when the body’s cells become resistant to insulin. In both the situations, the blood glucose level of the affected dog is higher than the normal level. Majority of the cases of diabetes in dogs are of type 2.

Choosing the Diabetic Dog Food

Controlling the blood glucose level of a diabetic dog is the first and foremost important step in treatment. Usually, insulin injections are prescribed under the supervision of a veterinarian. In addition, care should be taken about the oral medications and diet of the dog suffering from diabetes. Let’s see some of the tips, which will help in choosing healthy foods for a diabetic dog.

A diabetic dog food should contain less sugar, carbohydrates and sodium. It is to be noted that the soft and moist dog food contains higher amount of carbohydrates. The best option is to feed a good dry and balanced canned food; however, always make sure that you check the label of the contents before feeding. Don’t feed a canned food that is without formulations (nutritional facts) or label.

Feeding homemade food to a diabetic dog is a good idea, provided that one should consult the vet about the ingredients and the nutrient level that should be maintained while cooking. Care has to be taken while preparing food for a diabetic dog to maintain the nutrient content of the homemade food.

Choosing of a diabetic dog food also depends upon the fitness of the dog. If the diabetic dog is overweight, then his diet should contain low-calorie and low-fat food. However, in case of underweight dogs, the nutrient of the diet should be balanced in such a way that it contains appropriate quantity of fats.

A diabetic dog food should contain fiber to a certain amount. Since fiber is useful in slowing down the digestion of carbohydrates, it helps in maintaining the glucose level of the blood of the diabetic dog.

Regarding feeding frequency, a diabetic dog should be fed twice or thrice a day in smaller quantities instead of giving a heavy meal at a time. Red meat should be avoided in the diabetic dog food as far as possible.

It is recommended to discuss with a vet about the food and feeding habits for a diabetic dog. The overall health of a dog depends upon the attention of the dog owner. It is the responsibility of the dog owner to check for any changes in the dog’s behavior so that any problems regarding the health of the dog can be diagnosed in the early stages. Proper dog care should be given and regular medical checkup should be done.

Causes and Symptoms of Canine Diabetes Here in this informative article on the causes and symptoms of diabetes in dogs, we will take a look at the facts will help you to learn what causes diabetes in dogs and how to recognize its symptoms.

Finding out the causes and symptoms of diabetes in dogs is a humane thing to do for those who really love their pets. For a dog to suffer with a disease such as diabetes can be just as dangerous as it is for a human.

Here in this informative article on the causes and symptoms of diabetes in dogs, we will take a look at the facts will help you to learn what causes diabetes in dogs and how to recognize its symptoms. This can help you give your pet a longer, happier life.

The cause of diabetes in dogs is similar to the cause of diabetes in humans in that the pancreas, the organ that produces insulin for the body, becomes damaged. Insulin is small protein and a hormone used in the body of your dog to regulate metabolism. The cells in the pancreas of the dog are destroyed by a problem with the immune system and when that happens, the vital insulin production can be decreased or terminated altogether.

This means that the body of your dog can no longer use the food that it eats. When glucose can not be processed in the body, the energy from the food you give your pet is not used. Insulin is the ingredient that allows the body of your dog to use the glucose produced by the digestion of food. When insulin is not present, this more than likely will become a cause of diabetes in dogs. Problems with the pancreas are the main cause of diabetes in dogs and one to keep a watchful eye on.

Some lesser causes of diabetes in dogs are; a reaction to drugs, genetic problems, and Pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas). Dogs that are middle aged dogs are the likely target for diabetes. Middle aged is considered six to nine years. Younger dogs can also have problems with diabetes. Do not look at any certain age-limit as an automatic risk factor for when your dog may develop the symptoms of diabetes. Young or old, your dog has the possibility of developing diabetes.

The breeds that may be subject to diabetes at an earlier age are Golden Retrievers and Keeshonds. Other possible causes of diabetes in dogs are lethargic lifestyles and obesity.

Taking a look at the symptoms of diabetes in dogs, we find that the symptoms in dogs are similar to humans. Your dog can maintain a strong appetite and even overeat and still be a dog with diabetes. A list of the symptoms are: being overly thirsty, frequent urination, unexplained weight loss or weight gain, blurred vision, increased infections, sores that heal too slowly, and vomiting.

The more common and less noticeable symptoms of diabetes in dogs, such as being very thirsty and frequent urination can be overlooked easily. They are not a sure sign by themselves that your dog has diabetes, but it is wise to be vigilant as they can be the first sign of diabetes.

If the symptoms of diabetes in dogs are allowed to progress and grow, partial blindness or blindness can result. Cataracts can form in the eyes of your dog as diabetes works its silent way into the life of your pet. The cataracts form in the eyes as sugar in the bloodstream is collected there. These cataracts will not go away without special surgery even after your dog is diagnosed and then treated for diabetes. Some good news about diabetes-induced cataracts is that some of those cataracts will not grow or change. This can mean that if the symptoms of diabetes in your dog are caught early, the eyes can be spared more damage.

Care and feeding of your pets when they have diabetes symptoms
by Roy Jones Cynthia Smith, RN. Domesticated animals can also develop diabetes. Cats and dogs are regularly diagnosed with The Disease. Frequent vet checks can often check for the disease the symptoms get severe.

What are the symptoms of diabetes on a dog?
Excessive thirst and urination are main symptoms of diabetes in dogs as well as constant bad breath and unexplained weight loss. Solly Flush responded on 25 Feb 2009 at 2:29 pm #. I don’t think your dog has diabetes.

Is it common for dogs to have diabetes?
Dogs and cats. My dog has it. he gets humulin R and N every a.m. and p.m. It is more common then you would think. It would be even more common if people recognized the symptoms in his animals so they could get them to a vet.

Now that you know the causes and symptoms of diabetes in dogs, taking an active interest in the health of your dog will allow your pet to live longer and have a more productive life without the effects of diabetes.

Canine Diabetes: Symptoms and Treatment for Diabetes in Dogs Every 1 out of 500 dogs is at a risk of suffering from canine diabetes. As a dog owner, one needs to know about canine diabetes and its causes, symptoms, diagnosis and treatment, in order to prevent your pet from this chronic illness.

Canine diabetes is one of the major dog health problems, caused due to improper insulin production or insulin resistance. Insulin is a hormone, secreted by the beta cells of pancreas, responsible for maintaining blood glucose level. Insulin causes the body’s cells to take up glucose from the blood to be used as a source of energy. When the body produces very little or no insulin (type 1 diabetes), the body’s cells fail to take up glucose from the blood. In another case, when the body’s cells are resistant to insulin (type 2 diabetes), they fail to use sugar from the blood and hence, sugar remains in the blood stream only. In both the cases, the result is increase in the blood sugar level or hyperglycemia, which is a characteristic of diabetes mellitus. Majority of the dogs suffer from type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Canine Diabetes: Causes

Canine diabetes is more common in obese dogs; in addition, genetic and environmental factors also cause canine diabetes. Many a time, viral infections, low immune system, pancreatic infections and other hormonal disorders form a basis for the cause of canine diabetes. There are certain dog breeds such as poodles, beagles, schnauzers, keeshonds, dachshunds, etc., which are more susceptible to canine diabetes than the other breeds. Mostly dogs suffer from diabetes at the age of seven to nine years.

Canine Diabetes: Symptoms

The symptoms of canine diabetes are vague and dog owners have to be careful enough to analyze the noticeable signs. The major reason for all body disorders is due to failure of body’s cell to utilize blood glucose, which is one of the major energy fuels. The notable symptoms of diabetes in dogs are increased urination (polyuria), increased thirst (polydipsia) and increased hunger (polyphagia). Blood sample of a diabetic dog contains high sugar level in which the kidney can’t filter efficiently, resulting in excreting glucose in the urine. This results in loss of a large volume of body fluid because of osmosis. Consequently, a diabetic dog feels thirstier to compensate the lost fluid. Since body is deprived of energy fuel, it also suffers from an increased hunger and eats more in order to carry out the normal body metabolism.

A diabetic dog may also suffer from ketoacidosis (a life-threatening complication due to insulin deficiency and an increase in stress hormones), dehydration, weight loss, increased fatigue, lethargy, fungal infections and other health complications.

Canine Diabetes: Diagnosis and Treatment

Diagnosis of canine diabetes is done by physical examination, followed by a series of urine and blood tests. Normal blood sugar level for a dog will be 70 – 150 mg/dl (milligrams per deciliter). Canine diabetes is diagnosed, if a dog’s blood sugar is greater than 200 mg/dl.

Diabetes in dogs is treated by controlling the blood glucose level, which is achieved by giving insulin injections. There are three ranges of insulin injections for dogs – short-acting, medium-range and long-range. Short-acting lasts from one to four hours; medium-range remains effective for four to 24 hours and long-range lasts for eight to 28 hours. Injecting insulin should be followed carefully in accordance with the veterinarian’s prescriptions, since an overdose can lead to lowering of the blood glucose level than normal (hypoglycemia). In addition, a dog owner has to be careful about the pet’s diet and the oral medication prescribed by the veterinarian. Diet should include foods with less sugar content. The amount of red meat and dry dog food should be kept to a minimum, instead one can add soft moist and homemade food. Diabetic dogs should be fed smaller meals at least twice or thrice a day.

What to Feed a Diabetic Dog

If you have ever wondered "What do I feed a diabetic dog?" this article will cover the topics you are looking for. What to feed a diabetic dog is a very important point to learn on so that your dog will have a happy, enjoyable and productive life.

The food to feed a diabetic dog relates to the original problem of what caused the diabetes in the first place. The problem with diabetes is one of not being able to use the energy, called sugar or glucose that enters the bloodstream. This is caused by lack or total loss of insulin production by your dog’s pancreas. Overeating combined with a lethargic lifestyle causes an obese dog and then contributes to the cause of diabetes in dogs.

What to feed a diabetic dog in this case is just as important as making sure they start becoming more active. Do not let the dog lay around after a meal. It is also a good idea to give the dog two or three smaller meals instead of only one or two larger meals.

The food to feed a diabetic dog should be one of significantly low sugar content. The juicy or moist packages of dog food should be closely examined for high sugar content if you can. These are usually a prime source of too much sugar for your dog. The dry dog foods are better than the packaged moist ones for a diabetic dog.

The diet of a dog that you want to keep lean, healthy and active is one that you would normally use to prevent diabetes. This means that high-protein, slow-digesting foods are good for your dog, as they will not "shock" the dog’s body with a high dose of sugar all at one time. The food to feed a diabetic dog will be those that have a "slow burn" metabolically speaking.

A food not to feed to a diabetic dog is table scraps. If you do feed them from your own table, it is wise to avoid the spicy foods. A dog is not a person. Although feeding your dog "people food" may make you feel like you are including it as one of the family, the truth is that the fatty foods we eat can cause health problems for the dog. Commercial businesses have spent a lot of money creating a diet for your dog that is tailored to what it needs. Take advantage of their experience and your diabetic dog will have an easier life.

What to feed a diabetic dog should be seen in the light of the statistics. In the USA, as much as fifty percent of dogs are obese. This is a terrible statistic and can be improved easily by a simple lifestyle change for the dog. Keep in mind that as you would go ahead and eat less and exercise more if you had a weight problem, your dog is not going to be any different.

Some dog food companies make a special blend just for diabetic dogs. They have a high amount of dietary fiber, are low fat content and have none of what is called "simple sugars". Your diabetic dog’s diet can be improved with these types of dry dog foods.

For a diabetic dog, it is necessary to feed diabetic foods instead of the normal diet so as to avoid further complications. Let’s see how to choose the right food for a diabetic do.

There are a number of brands that provide good nutrition without chemicals or additives.

Diabetic Pet Diet: Food for Dogs and Cats Diabetes in dogs and cats is as common as diabetes in humans. As a pet owner, one needs to be aware about the diet for diabetic pets to avoid complications. Let’s look into food for diabetic dogs and cats.

Diabetes, a common condition among dogs and cats, is characterized by higher than the normal blood glucose levels. Diabetes is caused due to abnormal metabolism of insulin hormone in the body. There are two types of diabetes – Type 1 and type 2. Type 1 diabetes is caused due to failure of insulin production, whereas type 2 diabetes is caused due to resistance of the body’s cells towards insulin. About 1 in 400 cats and dogs suffers from diabetes mellitus; however, recent studies have shown that it is more common among cats. Diabetes in cats is mostly due to feeding of highly processed, low quality and carbohydrate-rich diets. Most of the pets (about 80-90%) suffer from type 2 diabetes.

Symptoms of diabetes in pets include weight loss, frequent urination and increased thirst. There may be loss of appetite or increased hunger. One of the important symptoms among diabetic dogs is vision problem or cataract, whereas in case of cats, there is weakening of the legs that becomes noticeable while walking. If there is any change in the general behavior of the pets, it is advisable to go for urine tests, blood tests and medical examination so that diagnosis can be done early.

Urine tests can be done at home using urine keto/glucose strips. For performing blood tests, one can take blood sample either by ear prick or lip prick. Glucometers for determining glucose levels in pets are available in the market. It is better to use this glucometer rather than the usual glucometer for human since results can vary due to difference in the size of red blood cells between pets and humans. If the test results are positive, then your pet should be examined by a veterinarian.

Diabetic Pet Diet: Food for Dogs and Cats

Diabetes treatment in pets is required to prevent severe symptoms such as malnutrition, blindness in dogs, paralysis in cats, ketoacidosis and other life-threatening symptoms. Treatment of pet diabetes is done by giving insulin injection, medication and maintaining proper diet. Metabolism of insulin in cats is faster than in dogs; hence, diabetic cats need more insulin injections than diabetic dogs. Insulin injections should be given under the prescription of a vet. It is to be noted that insulin products should not be heated or frozen. Oral hypoglycemic tablets that are used by humans are also found to be useful for diabetic cats. Let’s discuss about diets for diabetic dogs and cats that will help in lowering their high blood glucose levels.

One of the ways of controlling blood glucose levels is opting for diet for diabetic dogs and cats. Choice of diet for diabetic pets depends upon the overall health of the pets. For obese pets, diets with low carbohydrate and fat content are recommended, whereas for underweight pets, the diet should contain a balanced proportion of all the nutrients. Diets for controlling weight can have similar effect as diabetic diets for maintaining glucose levels.

It is very important to check the nutrient quality and the carbohydrate content while feeding diabetic cats. Diabetic cat foods should be low in carbohydrates and rich in proteins. It is found out that low carbohydrate diet reduces the need of insulin in the body. All commercial standard foods for cats are low in carbohydrates, moderately rich in fat and highly rich in protein. In addition, there are certain recipes of raw meat diets for cats that can provide proper nutrition for diabetic cats. Avoid dry foods as they contain high carbohydrates.

In order to maintain the nutrient composition, commercially produced diets are recommended rather than feeding homemade foods. If you do want to feed your pet with homemade food, it is advisable to consult the vet about the nutrient requirements. In case of non-availability of commercial diets, standard canned pet foods can be given. However, check the label for nutritional contents of the canned foods before feeding them to your pet.

Diabetic diet for pets should contain adequate amount of fiber as it slackens the digestion of carbohydrates, resulting in slow release of sugar into the blood stream. Intake of low carbohydrates diet can be supplemented with low fat and protein content, if the diabetic pet has other health complications such as pancreatitis or kidney problems. Diabetic dogs and cats should be fed less food at a time with increase in feeding frequencies.

It is advisable to consult and seek advice from a veterinarian before selecting foods for diabetic pets. Also take advice about the exercises that should be included while treating diabetic pets. There is a risk of hypoglycemia in diabetic dogs and cats that are being treated with insulin injections. Symptoms of hypoglycemia include hunger, lethargy and sleepiness. Hypoglycemia treatment is done by feeding glucose-containing foods. In case the pet is unconscious, glucose administration is done via mouth or intravenous injections.
